RETABLOS: Spanish Colonial Retablos are religious icons painted on pine wood. They are a Spanish Colonial artform developed by Spanish lay people in New Spain, (Spanish New Mexico, USA) during the 18th and 19th centuries. They are usually painted on pine wood with homemade gesso and natural pigments, acrylics, or waterbased pigments.Usually sealed with homemade pinon sap varnish, commercial sealers, or beeswax finishes.
