RETABLOS: Retablos are religious icons painted on pine wood. They are a Spanish Colonial artform developed by spanish laypeople in New Spain, (Spanish New Mexico, USA) during the 18th and 19th centuries. They are usually painted with homemade natural pigments, acrylics, or waterbased pigments. They can be painted over either homemade or commercial gesso. Usually sealed with homemade pinon sap varnish, commercial sealers, or beeswax finishes. The wood may be handcarved, handadzed, or a smooth surface.
