ERNESTO SALAZAR
" SANTERO de TAOS"
Ernesto is an award winning artist who professionaly carves santos on a full time basis using Red Cedar Juniper and Aspen woods. He collects his wood from the Thres Preidas mountains of Taos. His father Leo Salazar taught him how to carve when he was still a boy. Born in 1963 Ernesto grew up in Taos and still carves in the now famous "Salazar Style" his father created. Ernesto carries on that tradition today. He carves the "Old Way" using only chizels, knives, gouges, and a bow saw. He never uses power carving or power tools or woodworking machines. His work is in several galleries and museum permanent collections, including The National Hispanic Culture Center in Albuquerque, NM, The Millicant Rogers Museum in Taos, NM, and The Museum of International Folk Art in Sants Fe, NM . He has won many awards and is also included in many Corporate and Private Collections. He has been a participant of the Spanish Market held in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 20 years. He is also the topic of numerous newspaper and magazine articles. For more information about Ernesto please contact the Galleria at 505-246-9257 or go to decoloresdesigns@aol.com.
